LOCAL SPOTLIGHT: ED RAEGNER

R & J Liquor store owner, Ed Raegner, has gone viral for the quirky quotes on the old-fashioned sign outside his store in Granby; but to the Grand County community, he’s known for much more than just that. As a local small business owner and recently re-elected East Grand School District board member, he is committed to helping Grand County and its youth succeed.

----------

Q: You grew up in New York State – How did you end up in Grand County?

A: I moved here in 1994. Classic story – I just came for a year...

Q: What has kept you here all these years?

A: I love the community. It’s a great small community. People look out for each other and take care of each other. There’s a lot of good values in Grand County. I also love to ski and bike.

Q: How long have you owned R & J Liquor and how did that come about?

A: Since 2017. I was an alcohol sales rep at the time, and the previous owners had been my customers forever. They put it up for sale, and every time I went in they said, “You should buy this store.” And finally, I did. It’s been great. It’s been a really good experience. Granby’s a cool town and it’s a good place to do business.

Q: How did you get involved in local politics?

A: When my daughter Lillie was younger, I used to volunteer at Fraser Valley Elementary, so I was just really interested in that part of things. I liked to spend time with kids, coach sports, and volunteer at the schools. One of the board members moved, so the seat came up and I got a call asking me if I’d be interested. I think it’s really important to give back to the community and help the way you can. I think that with my business experience, and doing sales throughout the entire county for a long time, I got a good view of what each segment of the county wants and needs.

Q: You were just reelected to the school board, but previously you had to step down. Explain to me what happened there?

A: We were trying to come up with a replacement in a district where the board member had termed out and we’re looking at the map. Every time we do a census, they redraw the district map. I live right on the boundary and they moved the line with the newest map, so I was no longer in that district. That’s what caused the confusion.

Q: What are some of the major items that the school board is focusing on right now?

Our Superintendent is retiring, so we have to start a Superintendent search. It’s so important to the entire district that we find the right person for the job and help them transition; and with the bond passing, the board has a lot of work to do.

The most impactful part is going to be a new elementary school in Granby. That school is tremendously old and way too small. They did a study and figured out that school is way over capacity. I think it’s going to be great to have that new school. The goal is to have it done by

2024-2025 and to eventually have one big campus with the elementary, middle, and high schools sharing services like the sports fields, parking, etc.

We are also working on the Homegrown Talent Initiative (HTI). It is designed to pair high schoolers with local businesses so they can get some hands-on experience in a trade and develop life skills and work ethic. We want to expose kids to all the opportunity that’s right here in Grand County. We are also working on building a new Career Technical Education building on the high school campus. It’s like a modern-day shop class with things like culinary arts, welding equipment, building tools, CAD programming, 3D printing, etc.

--------

Like it or not, one thing is for sure – Grand County is growing, and it’s important that we are prepared to meet the demand. Having a kindergartner myself, I am excited about these positive changes for our youth and am glad we have someone like Ed Raegner representing us.

Next time you’re driving through Granby, remember to check out the latest quote on the R & J Liquor store sign for a good laugh. And be sure to stop in to pick up your favorite wine, beer, or liquor.

Zillow plunges 25% to lowest since July 2020, after company exits home-buying business

Willows project shifts to condos to town leader's dismay

News that a planned 204-unit apartment complex in Grand Park will actually be built as condominiums has further delayed approval for the project.

On Wednesday, the Fraser Town Board voted to continue discussions on a final development plan and preliminary plat for the Willows in Grand Park after developer Clark Lipscomb shared that the project’s plans had changed.

The Willows were originally designed as a market-rate apartment complex, financed in part by the Department of Housing and Urban Development. However, Lipscomb said on Wednesday that even with those funds, the project would not be financially feasible as apartments.
