Grand County Real Estate News

Greetings!
You wouldn’t know it’s February in Colorado with the abundant sunshine we’ve been experiencing the last few weeks. While I am certainly one to appreciate the sunshine and spring skiing, we sure could use some fresh snow to soften things up. Currently, it’s 21 degrees and snowing with about four inches so far from this storm. Looking to the next few days, we should see a bit more snow, cooler temps, and a nice warm up to the high 30’s and low 40’s next week. Typically, March is a snowy month for Colorado, so I anticipate a few more good storms. Above is a photo from the top of The Gondola over the holiday weekend. It was a wonderful weekend to be in Grand County!
The Grand County community is beginning to gear up for spring time events. One of my favorites is the Winter Park Mardi Gras festival on March 5th. From spring skiing to all the smiles and goofy costumes on the hill, it’s sure to bring a smile to everyone’s face. Click here for more information.
March is the last major push for rental revenue as multiple colleges go on Spring Break. April begins the slowdown of the year with the resorts all over Colorado closing for the season. Then begins Spring Cleaning!
Talk to you next month!

Irving third in men’s Olympic halfpipe qualifiers
|
Winter Park freeskier Birk Irving has become a consistent presence on the biggest stages, and his Winter Olympic debut on Wednesday night — or Thursday afternoon in China — went as well as he could have hoped.
Behind two strong runs, the 22-year-old Irving qualified through to the men’s halfpipe skiing finals in Zhangjiakou, which is a little more than 100 miles from Beijing, and will be among a 12-man finale seeking a spot on the Olympic podium when finals go down Friday night here in Colorado.
In the two-run qualifier, Irving finished third among the 23 skiers. His first-run score of 83.25 had him sitting in fourth place midway through, but his second-run score of 89.75 vaulted him up a spot, slightly edging out Nevada’s David Wise, who was fourth.

Summit’s Gold finishes in 5th in historic Olympic halfpipe final
|
The men’s snowboard halfpipe Olympic finals was nothing short of a cinematic Wild West shootout Thursday, Feb. 10, as the world’s best snowboarders went head to head in the 22-foot superpipe.
Among the 12-man field were three Americans in Chase Josey, Shaun White and Breckenridge resident Taylor Gold.
Josey got the competition going after snagging the last qualifying spot. He put together a solid first run with a 1080, switch 900 and a 1260. It was a complete run but garnered a score of only 62.50, putting Josey in sixth after his first of three runs.

Town talks traffic at Mary Jane, Winter Park Resort
|
Winter Park’s town council discussed how to address the traffic at Winter Park Resort’s Mary Jane entrance, which has become more problematic for locals and visitors.
On Tuesday, Mayor Nick Kutrumbos started the conversation by saying he had heard increasing comments about the traffic and wanted to make sure the town is on top of it.
“It’s not the town’s responsibility per say… it would be really great to work together (with the ski resort) on a solution,” Kutrumbos said.

Library Corner: Grand County’s storied ski history
|
Skiing in Grand County goes back well over a hundred years. Hot Sulphur Springs Winter Sports Club was established on October 23, 1911, by Swiss immigrant John Peyer and 25 members.
Owing to Peyer’s response to a Middle Park Times editorial, enthusiasm was ignited for hosting Colorado’s first winter carnival on New Year’s weekend. The Denver Post and Steamboat Pilot published details, leading to the creation of sledding, skating, and skiing events.
Taking notice were two Norwegian immigrants, Carl Howelsen and Angell Schmidt. They boarded a train in Denver with others bound for the winter carnival on December 29. At Rollins Pass-Corona Station, Howelsen and Schmidt disembarked and skied 44 miles in nine hours to Hot Sulphur Springs. Upon their arrival, they were greeted and hosted by Peyer.

Grand County updates short-term rental regulations
|
Grand County commissioners have approved some changes to short-term rental regulations as part of an ongoing effort to increase enforcement.
The changes are meant to target two main issues with short-term rentals in the county, the first being annual permitting.
The county first started taking a harder look at short-term rentals last July, when it was discovered that over half of the short-term rentals in unincorporated Grand County were operating without a permit. Since then, the county has been working to improve enforcement and has named Christian Hornbaker as the county’s STR coordinator to work through the various issues.

Vicious Cycle Brewing coming to Fraser Brewery Scene
|
For Rebecca Bierden and Nathan Watt, the owners of the new Vicious Cycle Brewing in Fraser, turning their dreams into a reality led to opening a brewery.
It started with inspiration sparked during a trip Bierden took to Antarctica and her realization that fulfilling her own wanderlust was unavoidable.
“While I was (in Antarctica) I met some girls and they had been traveling the world for a couple years,” Bierden said. “They had quit their jobs and sold their cars. I came home from that trip and said to Nathan we have to do this. Let’s do it now while we’re young.”

New Winter Park Fire Station moves forward
|
Winter Park will convey a town-owned property to the East Grand Fire District for construction of a new fire station on the south end of town.
On Tuesday, Winter Park’s council approved an intergovernmental agreement with the fire department to sell the land, known as the Lone Tree Lot, for $10 and a requirement that the station be built by Dec. 31, 2024.
Last March, East Grand Fire presented a plan for an 11,300 square foot station with two bays for emergency vehicles, residences for employees and volunteers, and space for partnering with Grand County EMS and local law enforcement. The station would be roughly the size of East Grand’s Tabernash location.

Grand Foundation helps Habitat break new ground
|
Habitat for Humanity of Grand County hopes to double its building capacity in 2022 to respond to the acute need for affordable local housing, and a recent Grand Foundation grant of $9,500 will move the nonprofit home-building organization closer to that ambitious goal.
“This grant will help us meet the moment,” Habitat Board President Martin J. Smith said, referring to the affordable housing crisis in the county in the aftermath of the COVID-19 economic meltdown and the 2020 East Troublesome Fire. “We’re grateful to the Grand Foundation for recognizing the need and helping Habitat address it.”

Granby Ranch looks to build new lots, but residents want promise for nearby road repairs
|
Granby Ranch’s new developer wants to build out 26 lots, but neighbors who have yet to see their roads fixed are asking the town not to approve the agreements until better guarantees can be made.
Granby’s staff has been working with developer GRCO and GR Terra for a subdivision improvement agreement on phases two and three of the filing eight section in the Granby Ranch neighborhood.
Subdivision improvement agreements are typical contracts between a town and a developer when building new lots to ensure the proper construction of infrastructure, like roads. The lots to be constructed sit on Night Hawk Court, Eagles Nest Court, Talon Way and Black Feather Court.
